Suseong Gu, Daegu City, Republic of Korea

On November 15, 1994, a delegation from Suseong-Gu visited Blacktown City Council and established an official sister-city relationship.

Suseong-Gu is located on the southeast of the Korean Peninsula 300 kilometres from the capital city of Seoul. Its population is about 460,000 and occupies an area of around 76.47㎢. Towns have been established from east to west while the Sincheon Stream runs from south to north and merges with the Geumhogang River.

Administrative organizations including a court, public prosecutor’s office, education office, hospitals, financial companies, and broadcasting station are concentrated in Suseong-Gu, so that it performs central functions of Daegu. The city also contains prestigious middle and high schools. These schools have been awarded the top ranking in the satisfaction rate of the national educational condition.

The convenient transportation and vast green areas (74% of the total area) are well harmonized to make Suseong-Gu one of the most pleasant residential areas in Daegu.

2017 Lunar New Year

The 2017 Lunar New Year event was held in the Chinese Gardens at Nurragingy Reserve, Doonside on Friday, 3 February between 5.00-9.30pm. Previously known as Chinese New Year in 2014 and 2015, the event was renamed ‘Lunar’ in 2016 to reflect the wide range of Asian cultures.

Response in 2017 was fantastic with over 10,000 spectators experiencing the performances, cultural displays, myriad of stalls and the amazing fire-works display amid the stunning Chinese Garden backdrop. 2016 Korean Flag Raising Ceremony 

Check out the photos of the Korean Flag raising ceremony held on 28 October 2016 in the Village Green Blacktown to acknowledge Korea’s National Foundation Day.

The ceremony was attended by Youth Ambassadors from Suseong-gu and Blacktown City Council, Mrs Noh-Kyong Kim (Chief of the Korean Local Government Centre Sydney), Ms Young Cha Senior Manager & Specialist, International Relations Korea Local Government Centre, GAOK Oceania Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Sydney, Elena Marinis, Principal Mitchell High and the school captains leadership group from Mitchell High School. A group of Tae Kwon Do experts performed while chef Heather Jeong produced an outstanding display and sampling of Korean food and side dishes.

An enjoyable afternoon for all concerned.  

A concurrent 2-week display in the Max Webber Library complemented the ceremony.

Youth from Suseong-gu visit

In October 2016, Baek Seungchan from the Exchange Cooperation Team Public Relations Division at Suseong-gu accompanied Kim Hyunrog and Choi Jinhyuk, two male Youth Ambassadors to Blacktown. The group spent time at Mitchell High School Blacktown, attended the Korean flag raising ceremony and joined the Blacktown delegation that visited Quirindi, our Sister City in northern NSW. The weekend was a wonderful experience for all concerned.

Kim and Choi also enjoyed home stay with our Youth Ambassadors, Kieran Hagerty and Patrick Gleeson forming strong friendships and bonds.

2016 Daegu Dong Middle School visit Mitchell High School, Blacktown  

Mitchell High School welcomed teachers and students from Daegu Dong Middle School in July and early August 2016 as part of their Sister School partnership. Check out the photos of the visit.

2015 Korean Flag Raising Ceremony 

Check out the below photos of the 2015 Korean Flag raising ceremony in the Village Green Blacktown to acknowledge Korea’s National Foundation Day.

The ceremony was accompanied by a performance of K-Pop music and dance by Justina, Katerina and Misaki from N.Y.A Entertainment. An outstanding display and sampling of Korean food, side dishes and Kimchi prepared by master chef Heather Jeong concluded the afternoon. No one went home hungry!!

Teachers and students from Mitchell High and Blacktown Girls High Schools attended the ceremony with the captains from Mitchell High assisting Mr Junhyun KEE (Director General of the GAOK Oceania at the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea) and the Mayor of Blacktown, Councillor Stephen Bali with the flag raisings.

The ceremony was well attended by the general public, members of the Sister Cities Committee and various Rotary Club representatives. The Blacktown Seniors Choir sang the Australian National Anthem.

A concurrent 2-week display in the Max Webber Library complemented the ceremony.

2014 20th anniversary of the signing of the sister-city relationship

During 2014, several events were held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the signing of the sister-city relationship. These included:

  • A pottery exhibition from Suseong Artpia was held at the Blacktown Art Centre in June
  • A delegation from Blacktown including Indigenous Performers attended the Suseong-Gu annual Lake Festival in September. During this visit, a tree planting ceremony was held and a Sister School agreement was signed between Mitchell High School Blacktown and Daegu Dong Middle School
  • A flag raising ceremony was held in the Village Green Blacktown on October 15 to acknowledge Korea’s National Foundation. The Mayor of Blacktown with Mr. Junhyan Lee, Director General of Korea Local Government conducted a tree planting ceremony.
  • Two Suseong-Gu youth delegates participated in the Youth Conference of the Sister Cities Australia (SCA) in November and actively promoted student exchange activities with the youth ambassadors of Blacktown.
