What Is It?
Blacktown City Council is very proud of the Youth Ambassador Program that the Council has been promoting since 1982.
This program involves the selection of two young people to serve as Ambassadors of our City youth for a period of twelve months.
The two young people who are selected are given the opportunity to represent the youth of our City by way of Public Speaking at events such as Citizenship Ceremonies and Civic Receptions, the opportunity to meet high profile individuals at Special Events and the chance to attend a Local Government related Conference which assists them to understand the way in which the Local Government Family can work so effectively.
This Local Government Conference is normally the Australian Sister Cities Conference and provides the opportunity for our Youth to exchange ideas and also provides wonderful networking opportunities.
What Is the Process?
In February each year Council advertises throughout the local area through local newspapers and direct mail out to all high schools both public and private. The letters are primarily targeted at Year 10 and Year 11 students.
Upon receipt of all applications, initial interviews are held with each applicant and on the same night a general knowledge quiz about Blacktown is also completed.
Following this initial stage the best 6 in terms of interview technique and quiz result are invited to a dinner with their parents to provide a 3/5 minute speech on a nominated topic. Candidates are made aware of the topic prior to the evening. A panel made up of Councillors and Community Members from Council's Sister Cities Committee adjudicate on the performance of each candidate taking in to account - Dress, Content and Public Speaking technique.
Lastly, following all speeches the cumulative score of the quiz, initial interview and speech presentation are calculated to select the two Youth Ambassadors for the following 12 months.
