Free Sustainable Living Workshops

Council offers a number of free environmental workshops throughout the year, aimed at engaging the Blacktown community in interactive learning for sustainability. It is a great opportunity for residents to learn more about how to reduce their impact on the environment and save money.

Workshop and tours scheduled for Spring and Summer 2009 are listed below.


The Self-Sufficient Chef

Come along and expand your cooking skills. You will be shown the traditional art of cheese and jam making along with many other exciting demonstrations.

Natural Personal Care

Learn how to avoid synthetic chemicals and treat your skin with natural, self-made products.

No-Dig Gardening Workshop

A No-Dig Garden is essentially a garden made above ground. Get rid of those heavy tools and forget the backbreaking labour, let nature do the work for you. Learn how to build a simple garden in your backyard. Includes a free light lunch!

UR-3R Alternative Waste Treatment Facility Tour
Come along and join a free tour to see how your garbage waste (from the green and red lid bins) is sorted and converted into compost and green power at the Eastern Creek UR-3R facility. Bookings essential on 9839 6248 or michelle.playford@blacktown.nsw.gov.au

Natural Cleaning
Learn how to make simple, effective and cheap cleaning alternatives and investigate some of the hazards associated with everyday cleaning products.

Worm Farming & Composting
Learn how to convert up to half your household waste into valuable fertiliser for your garden. Find out how to set up and maintain your own worm farm and compost at home.

Frogs & Franks Spotlight Tour

Come on this spotlighting tour to learn about frogs in their natural environment. The tour will provide you with an insight into how to identify frogs in your garden by sight, habitat and croak or call. Please bring a torch, wear sensible warm clothing and closed-in shoes. Includes a free supper of Frankfurts! Vegetarians will be catered for.

Chooks in Backyards
Turn your kitchen scraps into fresh, free-range eggs! Learn practical tips for caring for chickens in your own backyard.

Carbon Neutral Christmas

This workshop promises to be fun, hands-on and is designed to help you reduce your 'Christmas Eco Footprint'. Learn how to make alternative and eco gifts, reduce your waste at Christmas and make your own skin care products.
