Nurragingy Reserve

Nurragingy Reserve is a 90ha open space area located in the suburbs of Doonside and Rooty Hill. The reserve is very popular with local, district and regional communities as a recreational destination. It contains historically significant areas, including areas of Aboriginal significance. The reserve also features picnic areas, formal plantings and large areas of remnant bushland.

Nurragingy Reserve is one of the most significant remnants in the Blacktown LGA. It is the largest and least disturbed area of bushland along Eastern Creek, forming a vital link in this north-south flora and fauna corridor. Nurragingy Reserve contains a high level of diversity in its native vegetation, and provides habitat for a wide range of wildlife. The site contains significant vegetation communities, such as Shale-Gravel Transition Forest, Alluvial Woodland and Shale Plain Woodland, as well as a number of vulnerable and regionally significant species.

The vegetation consists mainly of Grey Box and Forest Red Gum open forest and woodland, with many old trees and good regeneration present. Cabbage Gum, Casuarina glauca and Melaeuca spp. line the creeks and ponds. The shrub layer includes Bursaria spinosa, Acacia decurrens and Dillwynia juniperina. The ground cover is diverse with many native herbs and grasses. Wetland species also occur in the creek and along the streambanks.
