Deterring Indian Myna Birds from your yard

Indian Mynas are an introduced bird that readily adapts to urban built-up environments. You can modify your backyard to make it more attractive to native birds and discourage Indian Myna's. Indian Myna's like neat, manicured lawns with shrubberies and hard surfaces. You can make changes such as planting more native trees, shrubs and native grasses and minimising your lawn area.
What can you do to deter Indian Myna birds from your yard?

  • Did you know that seed for native birds can attract Indian Mynas and they will quickly dominate your garden? If you see Mynas at your bird feeder or in your garden, stop putting out birdseed immediately.

  • Its best to feed pets inside, or if that is not possible, put pet food inside during the day.
  • If you have chickens or ducks, feed then in a secure pen so Mynas can't get to the food.
  • If you feed goats or horses, it is best to stay with the animals while they are feeding and clean up spilled or leftover pellets or grain.
  • Mynas like to nest in tree hollows, roofs, exotic trees and the dead fronds of palms. To break the nesting cycle block holes in roofs and eaves and keep palms well trimmed.
