NSW Climate Change Fund: Washing Machine Rebates
Washing machines are typically the third highest user of water in the home. As part of the NSW Government's Climate Change Fund, Sydney Water offers customers a $150 rebate for buying a new washing machine with at least a 4½ star water efficiency rating.
Sydney Water's Washing Machine Rebate has been incorporated into the NSW Government's $100 million Residential Rebate Program under the Climate Change Fund. From 1 August 2008 the rebate is available to all households in NSW. Sydney Water will continue to administer the rebate in their area of operations and the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change will administer the rebate in all other areas.
A 4½ star water efficient washing machines can save more than 24,000 litres of water a year which is an average saving of around $38 on your water bill.
- In addition, water efficient washing machines:
- are energy efficient
- are gentle on your clothes so they last longer
- have more program options, such as time delay and anti-crease cycles
- have a better washing action (they clean clothes with less detergent, which is better for the environment)
- have higher spin speeds so clothes will dry faster
- have an 'out of balance correction' which means no more tangled clothes.
Washing machine rebate eligibility criteria
To qualify for a $150 rebate you must:
- buy a new washing machine with at least a 4½ star water efficiency rating and pay for it in full between 1 August 2008 and 30 June 2010
- have an approved connection to a Sydney Water main at the property where the machine is installed
- buy the machine for domestic use.
Eligible washing machines are listed on Sydney Water's website. Eligible machines are also clearly labelled in stores and retail staff can advise you which machines are eligible. If you are not sure if a machine is eligible, please contact Sydney Water on 13 20 92 before buying the machine.
