Community Gardens

Within the Blacktown Local Government Area there are three established community gardens with a fourth garden currently being established at the Riverstone Neighbourhood Centre.

Community gardens seek to involve the community, government and businesses in the development of the gardens to ensure their long-term viability. One of the aims of the community gardens is to demonstrate principles of sustainability including water conservation, waste minimisation and basic permaculture principles.

All of the gardens have been developed utilising organic, no-dig garden principles and techniques involving composting and the recycling of household and garden waste. Click here for more information on composting and worm farming.

How can I get involved?

The gardens have regular opening hours/days where volunteers meet to work in the gardens. Volunteers are able to contribute as much or as little time to the gardens as possible. Volunteering at the community gardens allows individuals to learn new or increase their gardening skills, enjoy freshly grown produce, practice ways to minimise waste and meet people from their local community.

Where are the gardens located?

  • Bidwill Community Garden: Chestnut Crescent Bidwill (nearest cross street Elata Way).
  • Oasis Community Garden: Rossvale Street Toongabbie/Seven Hills.
  • Shalvey Community Garden: Shalvey Community Centre (off Sedgman Crescent).
  • Riverstone Neighbourhood Centre Community Garden and Frail Aged Men's Shed: Sam Lane Community Complex, Park Street, Riverstone. For more information about this garden or to volunteer, please contact Maree on 9627 3219 at the Riverstone Neighbourhood Centre.
