PDF and ZIP Documents

Blacktown City Council uses two formats for some of the larger documents it publishes on the Internet: PDF and ZIP.

A PDF file is produced using Acrobat software from Adobe and is intended to reproduce the document as it was originally printed. A large number of sites use PDF as their standard for the distribution of documents.

To read a PDF file, you will need to download the Adobe Reader software from http://www.adobe.com. The software is free.

To move around the PDF document online, try moving the cursor over subheadings. Where the 'open hand' pointer changes to a 'pointing finger' a link to a related document has been created.

Please also note that in some cases documents may appear to be 'missing' pages. This is because these are produced originally in print format and some pages are removed when being converted to online format. Typically, the pages removed are section headings and "this page left deliberately blank" which are not required for online access.

For your convenience, the PDF documents may also be downloaded to your own computer and read 'offline'. To do this, right click on the name of the file and save it.

To help users better use 'online' time, some Council documents have been 'zipped'. A ZIP file can either compress a large file or link a number of smaller files into a single compressed file for downloading. The advantage of a ZIP file is that it is smaller than the original and will therefore require less time to download..

There are a number of different software programs which will create and 'unzip' ZIP files. Most are 'shareware', or try-before-you-buy. One popular program can be accessed at http://www.winzip.com
