Fireworks, live entertainment, fun and games are some of the great draw cards for the 2009 Cancer Council's Blacktown City Relay for Life event scheduled over the October 31 and November 1 weekend at Blacktown Olympic Park, Eastern Road, Rooty Hill.
From 10am, live performances will begin on stage featuring a range of entertainers including the Blacktown City Jazz Band, Blacktown Country Music Club, Steven Fogarty, Wayne Knight, Cindy's Dancers, Aquarius Dancers, Peter Rogers Show Stoppers, Cerdon College and Glass Train Band.
At 4.45pm, one of the highlights of the Relay for Life will be the Miss Relay beauty pageant, where male team members are dressed up by their fellow team members to impress a crowd of pageant judges.
At 8pm, the Candlelight Ceremony will see the Athletics Track at Blacktown Olympic Park light up with hundreds of candles, paying tribute to those who have lost their battle with cancer and those who are currently fighting this insidious disease..
This poignant and moving ceremony will be accompanied by the musical talents of Kate Vincent and will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display. The ceremony is open to the local community and residents, who are encouraged to come along and take part by purchasing a candle on the night for a gold coin donation.
"The Candle Light Ceremony is a beautiful and very moving moment over the Relay for Life weekend. It brings everyone a little bit closer together and is a great show of community compassion and spirit", Blacktown Relay for Life Chairperson, Peter Filmer said.
"I encourage the community, even if they aren't in a Relay team to come down at 8pm or at any time throughout the Relay and see what this event is all about and enjoy some free entertainment", Chairperson Filmer continued.
The Blacktown Relay is still open for teams to register, billed as a 'Team Event to Fight Cancer', Relay for Life involves teams of 10 to 15 people taking turns to walk laps around their local oval. Relay for Life is an overnight event - enabling walkers to come and go as they please, or pitch a tent next to the track and stay the night.
To date, 69 teams have registered and over $50,000 has been raised, however more teams and fundraising is needed!
