2011 Blacktown Fiesta hailed a success

The Blacktown Fiesta is over after eight successful days of diverse and exciting events and performances for Blacktown City residents and the wider western Sydney community.

The Blacktown Fiesta opened on Saturday 21 May with what is fast becoming the community's favourite event - The My Lords and Ladies Medieval Fayre at Nurragingy Reserve.

Over two days, Nurragingy Reserve was transformed into a world of medieval magic, where close to 50,000 people experienced life as Europeans lived in the Middle Ages.

"The Medieval Fayre was an outstanding event, the amount of positive feedback we have received from the community has been overwhelming", Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Alan Pendleton said.

2011 also marked the first time that the Medieval Fayre hosted an International Jousting Competition with riders travelling from across Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom to take part.

Other events in a jam-packed Fiesta week included; The Reconciliation Walk and Gathering, Blacktown City Fun Runs and Walks, Whalan May Fair, National Sorry Day, three kids concerts featuring Dora the Explorer, art and performance exhibitions at Blacktown Arts Centre, a monthly Sports Awards presentation at Westpoint Blacktown and Bush Poets at the Royal Cricketers Arms Hotel and Alroy Tavern.

The Blacktown Fiesta concluded on Saturday 28 May with the spectacular Streets Alive and Parade Day featuring a performance by Justice Crew and a meet and greet with children's group Hi-5.

Main Street, Campbell Street and Flushcombe Road were transformed by seven performance stages and and 300 street stalls . Over 60,000 people made their way to the Blacktown CBD for this finale which was a vibrant array of dance, culture and entertainment.

"The Medieval Fayre and the Street Alive and Parade Day were the main attractions of the Blacktown Fiesta. These two events fascinated massive crowds, and it was pleasing to see the community spirit of Blacktown come alive", Mayor Pendleton said.

"I would like to give a big thank you to the staff of Blacktown City Council for making 2011 Blacktown Fiesta possible, also to the many community groups, performers, volunteers and sponsors who have helped to make the Fiesta such a success".

"The spirit of Blacktown City has captured the community's imagination over the past week setting a benchmark for future festivals in Blacktown City and across western Sydney", Mayor Pendleton continued.
