Council awards 11 Blacktown City residents with $1,500 tertiary scholarships

Tertiary scholarships valued at $1,500 each were awarded to 11 Blacktown City residents who achieved outstanding academic performance in 2006, it was announced at Blacktown City Council's meeting last night, Wednesday, March 28, 2007.
Blacktown City Council's annual tertiary scholarship program offers students who are Blacktown City residents and who have completed at least one year of study at a recognised tertiary institution, the opportunity to win a $1,500 scholarship to assist with their continuing studies.
This year, the inaugural Anne Aquilina Tertiary Scholarship was awarded with the successful applicant being Mr Grant Scheffers from Kings Langley who is studying a Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy ) and hopes to apply his studies in Blacktown City in the future.
The other 10 successful recipients of Blacktown City Council's Tertiary Scholarship Program are:
- Adrian Jamolin of Woodcroft - studying a double degree with a Bachelor of Media & Bachelor of Law and hopes to engage in policy writing in the future.
- Katherine Talmage of Blacktown - studying Bachelor of Performing Arts and hopes to utilise her skills to assist with the development of performing arts opportunities for the people of Blacktown City.
- Ben Gurling of Blacktown - studying a Diploma of Fine Arts, has a creative flair and would like to be employed locally in graphic design.
- Craig Scheffers of Kings Langley - studying a Bachelor of Engineering and sees himself as leaning towards civil engineering concentrating on the provision of infrastructure to developing communities.
- Alice Kemp of Quakers Hill - studying a Bachelor of Arts - Psychology hopes to apply her studies to a welfare related discipline in mental health.
- Lara Beach of Kings Langley - studying a Bachelor Business & Bachelor Law. Lara has her sights firmly set on joining a legal firm with her long-term goal to become a Solicitor.
- Lesly Alburquerque of Mount Druitt - studying a Bachelor of Economics and Social Science. Lesly has a keen interest in world politics and hopes to become a policy writer.
- Regina Haggar of Doonside - studying a Bachelor of Science & Bachelor Arts concentrating on Museum studies. Regina is particularly interested in Indigenous and Ancient Cultures.
- Philippa Farrugia of Kings Langley study a Bachelor Psychology with honours. Philippa has already undertaken work for a number of voluntary groups including Lifeline and at this stage has not determined what employment path that she will take.
- Phillip Boncardo of Riverstone - studying Bachelor Arts and Bachelor Law and hopes to pursue a career as a local Solicitor primarily serving as an advocate to the people of Blacktown City.
"There can be no doubt that Council's scheme to assist people in their pursuit of tertiary education is well founded as evidenced by the quality of our recipients receiving this year's scholarships. The diversity of courses being undertaken should serve the Blacktown City community extremely well when our recipients' studies have concluded and they utilise this knowledge in their working lives in our City," Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Leo Kelly, OAM said.
Application forms for Blacktown City Council's 2007 Tertiary Scholarship program will be available from Council in November this year.
