Blacktown City get your Gardens ready for the 2008 Garden Competition

Entries are now open! More than 10 categories to enter including Blacktown's Most Attractive Street
Entries are now open for one of Blacktown City Council's most popular events; the 2008 Blacktown City Garden Competition.

"The Annual Garden Competition is an opportunity for individuals and communities to showcase their gardens to the City of Blacktown, and to participate in an event that highlights the beauty and pride of our City," Mayor of Blacktown, Councillor Leo Kelly, OAM said.
Green thumbs or novices can enter one or a number of suitable categories that include;
- Champion Garden
- Best Front Garden
- Best Backyard
- Best New Garden
- Best Overall Unit/ Townhouse or Villa Complex Garden
- Best Commercial/Industrial / Government / Community/ Garden
- Best School or High Education Garden
- Best Australian Plants Garden
- Best Park/ Reserve Managed by a Park Committee and;
- Numerous special awards Categories such as Best Garden Prepared by a Person with a Disability and Best Children's Garden.
Preliminary judging will take place between Tuesday, September 16, 2008 to Friday, September 26, 2008, with final judging on Thursday, October 2, 2008, and will be assessed on the following criteria; overall appearance; general condition of plants and gardens; and design, including colour and effectiveness of planting.
Cash prizes and vouchers, will be awarded to winners of each main category, and various Special Award Winners.
Residents are also able to nominate the street on which they live, for the Most Attractive Street Award. The winning street will receive recognition in the local papers and a sign will be placed on the street, identifying that street as the winner of the year. Letters of recognition will also be sent to residents acknowledging their contribution to the Award.
"The judging will comprise viewing the appearance of the street as a whole, and assessing the standard of upkeep of footpaths and property frontages. This year's competition will be the best ever and Council is most appreciative of the support of our Presenting Partner, WSN Environmental Solutions," Mayor Kelly said.
ENTRIES CLOSE: 4.30pm, Friday, September 12, 2008. The winners will be announced on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 7.00pm in Bowman Hall, Campbell Street, Blacktown. All entrants, sponsors and judges are invited to the presentation.
