Blacktown City Libraries go Wireless

Wireless Hotspot Service now available - FREE to members

The Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Leo Kelly, OAM today announced that Blacktown City library members can now access FREE wireless Internet while at one of Council's four branch libraries in Lalor Park, Riverstone, Mount Druitt and Blacktown.

The new Wireless Hotspot Service will allow members to simply take their laptop or Internet device to one of the libraries, obtain an access code from staff, and enjoy two hours of FREE web browsing.

"The addition of wireless Internet to the resources available at our City's libraries will help cater to the growing needs of the community to access the Internet", Mayor Kelly said.

"The four Council libraries already offer public access computers, and have done so since 1996 and since that time the usage and accessibility has grown from 1,600 Internet sessions in 1996 to more than 100,000 Internet sessions in 2007".

"At Council, we recognise that this is a phenomenal growth rate and with modern technology becoming more the norm and a part of everyday life, this demand is going to continue to grow".

"However, while the world is becoming more technologically savvy according to the 2006 Census, 40.5 percent of Blacktown City households do not have an Internet connection in their home".

"The addition of the Wireless Service will not only complement the existing public access computers available at our libraries but it will cater for the growing demand and provide greater access to the Internet for the community" Mayor Kelly continued.

The Wireless Hotspot Service will also be available at Council's newest library, the Dennis Johnson Branch Library when it opens in Stanhope Gardens in 2009.

The Wireless Service is available to all library members; membership to the library is FREE and can be done at any of the four branch libraries across Blacktown City.
