Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope wins prestigious swim school award again!

Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope has shown again that it is the best in the state at teaching children and adults to swim by taking out the top industry award - Austswim's Large Swim School of the year.

Surfees Swim School at Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope was named 'Large Swim School of the Year' at the joint NSW Water Safety Awards and the Austswim Awards of Excellence held at the Crown Plaza, Coogee.

The Award recognises the Leisure Centre's excellence, commitment and innovation in the development and delivery of swimming and water safety programs through their learn to swim program. Since the centre's inception in 2003, Surfees Swim School has become one of the largest and most successful programs in NSW with more than 408,000 people trained by the school in a variety of programs and levels across all ages and abilities.

On the night, the Hon. Graham West MP, NSW Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation also announced that the centre had also received high commendations for the following Water Safety categories, Community Education Program of the Year and Contribution to Water Safety by an Organisation.

The award recognises the Centre's drive and commitment to educate young children across the community in sun-safe and water-safe practices.

The 'Surfees Safe Summer' program is unique in NSW as it is written, produced and performed by Surfees Swim School Instructors who present the program through live interactive and fun pantomime performances. It is also available as a DVD.

"Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope now has 43 AUSTSWIM qualified teachers and presently 2,675 students are enrolled. Surfees Swim School provides a wide scope of swimming and water safety programs catering for all ages, abilities, and community groups. From infants through to adults, school programs and intensive school holiday programs, all classes correspond with the Royal Life Saving Society's Swim & Survive Program aiming to develop a strong safe swimmer who has a healthy respect for the water", said Gordon Mallett, Chief Executive Officer for AUSTSWIM (NSW).

This award further recognises the Centre's absolute commitment to providing quality programs for the Blacktown community through effective water safety programs." said Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Leo Kelly, OAM.
