Friday, July 11, 2008
Blacktown Arts Centre (BAC) invites artists to submit expressions of interest for its brand new Performing Arts Residency Program. Expressions of Interest for the residency program are NOW OPEN and close on THURSDAY, JULY 30, 2008.
The Performing Arts Residency Program aims to provide professional development opportunities for individuals or small groups of artists in the development, experimentation and mentorship of new works. This is part of Blacktown City Council's commitment to developing the creative talent of the artists of Western Sydney.
Applicants must be artists who are residents of the Blacktown City Local Government Area or Western Sydney, or who can demonstrate a strong connection to Blacktown City. BAC strongly encourages expressions of interest from artists with Aboriginal, culturally and linguistically diverse and/or youth backgrounds.
All performance areas including Music, Theatre, Dance and Cross-art form practices and writing for performance are eligible for the residency program. Projects that show outstanding potential may subsequently be considered by BAC for further support and development as part of its future programming.
A budget of up to $5,000 has been allocated to each residency for artist fees, mentoring fees and production costs. Typical residencies will run between 2 to 3 weeks and artists will have full use of the BAC performance studio and access to a range of facilities and services during this period.

One main aim of the residency is to provide professional development opportunities for artists. To facilitate this aim, applicants are required to nominate and link with an industry mentor as part of the residency. Hours of mentorship are determined by the nature of each project. BAC can suggest suitable mentors for emerging artists who do not have established links in their industry. The mentorship can take place in the formof informal meetings to discuss and build artistic visions, content, processes and critical analysis of work being developed.
