Celebrate NAIDOC Week in Blacktown City

Thursday, June 26, 2008

NAIDOC Week will be celebrated across Blacktown City with many FREE events on offer for residents and their families to enjoy between 6 - 13 July, 2008.

NAIDOC WEEK provides a platform to promote awareness, recognition and an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' history and culture. This year in 2008, NAIDOC Week has been themed Advance Australia Fair to encourage people to reflect on the Australian principle of a "Fair go" and for people to consider the inequalities still experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia today.

NAIDOC Week events taking place across Blacktown City include two Family Fun Days in Blacktown and Emerton.

The Emerton Family Fun Day will be held at Emerton Youth Recreation Centre on Tuesday, July 8 between 10am - 3pm and will feature workshops, beading, face painting, traditional Aboriginal games, a BBQ, Oz Tag, basketball and traditional foods.

Blacktown Arts Centre will host a Koori Family Fun Day on Saturday, July 12 between 12pm - 3pm and will feature film, community stalls, art displays and workshops, sports clinics, stalls, face painting, BBQ food and more.

The day will also feature the painting of a mural by local Aboriginal artists Jamie Eastwood and Jason Wing.
