Celebrate Refugee Week

Thursday, May 15, 2008

Calling all Blacktown City residents to take part in a great opportunity that will allow your creative juices to flow and expand.

This year, Blacktown Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) in-conjunction with Blacktown City Libraries is organising a series of art workshop in the lead up to Refugee Week.

This year's theme for Refugee Week is "A Place Called Home" and encourages people to think about the global themes of protection and human rights by focusing on the fundamental right to a secure place to call home.

Blacktown MRC in partnership with the Blacktown City Max Webber Library is holding an Refugee Week art contest in three age categories 8 - 11, 12 - 19 and 20+ surrounding this theme.

There are a series of workshops that residents can take part in as part of the contest.

Each workshop has all the materials for residents to complete an entry and will be run FREE at the Blacktown MRC each Wednesday and Friday.

The workshops will culminate in an Art Exhibition to be held at Max Webber Library, celebrating Refugee Week.

Workshops are run every Wednesday and Friday at Blacktown MRC (125 Main Street, Blacktown). Residents that are interested and would like to enter should contact Blacktown MRC - 9621 6633 but be quick as places are limited.

An Awards Night will be held at the Blacktown City Max Webber Library on Friday, June 27 where the winners of the three art categories as well as a People Choice Award will be announced by the Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Leo Kelly, OAM. The overall winner will have their painting featured on the cover of this year's MRC Annual Report.

All paintings will be available to view on the MRC website and displayed at the library. For further information contact Council on 9839 6000.
