Community Planting Day for Carbon Trading Program

Wednesday, October 8, 2008

Residents, community and business groups are invited to a community planting day at Mujar Bija Reserve (corner of Bungarribee Road and St Martins Crescent), Blacktown on Sunday, October 19 between 9am - 1.30pm to celebrate Council's Regenesis program.

Over 1,000 native plants will be planted on the day, which will add to the area's biodiversity and help capture and store (sequester) carbon emissions.

Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Charlie Lowles said the Community Planting is just one of the many ways the local community, businesses and community organisations can participate in the Regenesis Project - an innovative carbon-trading project between Liverpool Plains Shire Council and Blacktown City Council.

"The local community are encouraged to come along on the Community Planting and help out by planting one or a few plants as part of the project".

"This planting is just the first in a series of reserves in the local government area that will be revegetated as part of the Regenesis Project", Mayor Lowles continued.

The Regenesis Project over the next three-years will have a strong focus on engaging business, community organisations and individuals by encouraging participation in a range of ways, including:

  • Participating in community planting events
  • Offsetting emissions through supporting Regenesis plantings
  • Planting on private landholdings and receiving the benefits of carbon trading

The Regenesis project, a first for Local Government in New South Wales and has been made possible thanks to a $2 million grant under the NSW Government's Environmental Trust Urban Sustainability Program. The project involves native trees being planted to capture and 'sequester' or store carbon, thus reducing the effects of climate change and improving biodiversity, salinity and water quality outcomes.
