Blacktown City Council has made a donation to local Kings Langley resident Mathew Cole to complete the Kokoda Trail with the Australian Army Cadet 22nd Battalion in July, 2008.
Mathew, a 16 year old student, is a member of the 202 Army Cadet Unit, Blacktown and has been selected from 60 candidates to participate in the trek in July.
The donation from Council will assist with Mathew's travel expenses to take part in the 96 kilometre trail which became known to Australians during the World War II campaign. The trail spans across a rugged mountainous country of rainforest, jungles of fern, orchids, birds and clean mountain streams which tumble into steep valleys.
The Kokoda Trail gives those who participate, an understanding and appreciation of the outstanding feats achieved by Australian Military personnel during World War II. The Kokoda Trail was the scene of some of the bloodiest battles engulfing the history of the fight between Australian and Japanese armies.
"The Kokoda Trail is one of the world's greatest treks and is to be enjoyed by all that take up the challenge. Representation by a young student from Blacktown is an outstanding achievement and Council is proud to help support this educational and insightful opportunity," said Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Leo Kelly, OAM.
"Kokoda was arguably one of Australia's most significant campaigns in World War II. It is important that we provide assistance in furthering the studies of local residents, especially opportunities that reflect our history and in shaping of our nation", Mayor Kelly said.
"Council is pleased to supports the initiative of local residents such as Matthew and wishes him every success on this remarkable journey", said Mayor Leo Kelly.
