Awarding $1,000 prize money to local individuals, groups or organisations

For the first time, Blacktown City Council is offering $1,000 prize money to a local individual, group or organisation for their distinguished and sustained contribution to the broader understanding of Blacktown's history.

The Blacktown Mayoral History prize aims to encourage the community to embrace the rich and diverse history of Blacktown City and award those that have already undertaken research, documentation and promotion of Blacktown's remarkable history.

Applicants for the Blacktown Mayoral History prize must be an individual, group or organisation that has produced work in the past 5 years that contributes to the understanding of Blacktown's history.

Applications will then be assessed on the depth and quality of the published work and the contribution it has made to the community over the past 5 years.

"This is the first ever prize of its kind to be awarded to the local community. The Blacktown Mayoral History Prize endeavours to set a trend into rewarding the local community for their engagement and commitment in the research and documentation of Blacktown's history," said Mayor of Blacktown, Councillor Leo Kelly, OAM.

"Blacktown City has an amazing history, starting with our first inhabitants, the Darug people, and has grown to encompass a community that consists of over 160 different cultures. It is important that our history is documented to share with the rest of the community, future generations, as well as others that are not familiar with the area," remarked Mayor Kelly.

Entries Open for the Blacktown Mayoral History Prize are now open and entries close on Friday, August 15, 2008.

The winner of the Blacktown Mayoral History Prize will be announced by Mayor Kelly in a special presentation on Thursday, September 4, 2008.
