Council to donate 20 plants to participating National Tree Day schools

Thursday, July 2, 2009

The Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Charlie Lowles is encouraging primary and secondary schools in the Blacktown City Local Government Area to plant a tree on School's National Tree Day on Friday, July 31 - to help improve the local environment and contribute to one of our City's best features - our bushland and trees.

Schools National Tree Day provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn about the importance of maintaining our local biodiversity, whilst having lots of fun in the process. Council is supporting the National Tree Day initiative and will be donating 20 native plants and shrubs to all schools that register before July 24.

National Tree Day is Australia's largest community tree-planting event which has seen over 2 million volunteers plant over 13 million native trees and shrubs. This result has been achieved through the efforts of many local Councils, schools and community groups who have supported the event over the years.

"Schools National Tree Day is a terrific environmental initiative for local schools to help sustain our local environment and keep our City a green City," said Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Charlie Lowles.

Other ways schools can get GREEN: Households of Blacktown City are entitled to receive two FREE shrubs or trees, per year. Schools can ask parents whether they would consider donating their trees to the school. Parents simply need to contact Council and sign over their trees to the school, it's that easy! For more information on how to sign over trees, parents should contact Council on 9839 6000.

To join in on Schools National Tree Day remember for a fun day, bring along a drink, wear a hat, long sleeves, long pants, gloves and appropriate closed in shoes.
