Councillor Collins takes on the Sandakan Death March Trek
Wednesday, October 14, 2009
Blacktown City Ward 3 Councillor, Kathie Collins, OAM is currently completing the Sandakan Death March Trek to raise money for the Cancer Council's Blacktown Relay for Life.
The Sandakan Trek is approximately 250km long and takes 11 days and 10 nights to complete. It follows the same route as the infamous Death March during War during WW II which resulted in the deaths of more than 2428 Allied Prisoners of War. Only 6 soldiers survived the March
Today the Trek remains a challenge and provides an all-round physical, mental and cultural experience whilst allowing the walkers to see the magnificent natural beauty of Sabah from Sandakan to Ranau.
Councillor Collins is very interested in the history surrounding the Sandakan Trek and feels strong compassion towards those who died there.
"I once read a biography of one of the six survivors from a large group of 2,500 Australians and it was truly touching. I am taking on this challenge because I want to gain a deeper understanding of those who suffered, and to walk in their steps would be an experience I hope to never forget."
"I believe this is a great opportunity to raise money for Relay for Life and give me the inspiration I need to keep going when the going gets tough," said Councillor Collins.
This is not Councillor Collins first international trek, Councillor Collins completed the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea in July 2006, also to raise money for Relay for Life.
Councillor Collins has been commended by many on her journey including the Mayor of Blacktown City and fellow Councillor, Charlie Lowles.
"Councillor Collins has demonstrated the great qualities of endurance, strength of character, compassion and faith in humanity that have made her such a valuable leader within our City. I wish her all the best on her current trek," Mayor Lowles said.
Residents are encouraged to support Councillor Collins in her fundraising efforts by making a donation online at www.relay.cancercouncil.com.au/?2009/blacktown_2009/st_patricks/170042 or to: Kathie Collins, 42 Hadrian Ave, Blacktown, NSW 2148.
"The Sandakan Trek is an experience I am very much looking forward to. The Relay for Life is an opportunity to be a part of something that you will never forget and you will feel a sense of pride because you are helping to find a cure," Councillor Collins said.
