"Soup is fundamental. The best soups usually just happen. An old bone, some celery tops, anything forgotten, discarded, remembered, leftover, ridiculous can become a soup. Soup is anything. Everything. Necessity, play, and inspired improvisation are its only requirements, as in all good cooking." Alvin Curran
As part of its Artist in Residence program, Blacktown Arts Centre is pleased to present SOUNDSOUP, a free weekly Sunday afternoon (2pm-4pm) activity until October 28, 2007 where people interested in sounds can bring a sound, instrument or idea of their choice and enjoy a fun filled afternoon of play.
SOUNDSOUP is all about discovery and exploration.and is open to people of all backgrounds and abilities - everyone is welcome, from listeners to dancers, players, actors, drivers, painters, laughers, makers, singers, eaters and breathers
Preferably, people will bring along with them a sound of some kind - this can be ANYTHING. Some sound making things will be provided during the afternoon and instrument building will be encouraged. Over the next ten weeks, people can take part in building one of the biggest wind chimes!
SOUNDSOUP will be conducted in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere, with only one rule: RESPECT.
Developed by Warren Summers, an emerging young Australian composer who grew up in Mt Druitt and currently the composer in residence at Blacktown Arts Centre. Warren studied composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and has since pursued community oriented projects located in Western Sydney. Earlier this year, Warren also directed 'The Parade of the Balloon Chariots' - a massed performance for school children for Hawkesbury Regional gallery. Warren is passionate about developing original contemporary works that involve community participation.
"SOUNDSOUP challenges us to let sounds just be themselves - giving participants the chance to explore the amazing character of each sound. It is a bit like looking closely at a flower or watching the clouds in the sky", Composer in Residence, Warren Summers said.
To consider sounds in this way we need to develop a special kind of openness. We need to let go of our preconceptions and definitions, SOUNDSOUP gives a forum for this exploration.
