Kids invited to join Peta and the Croc as they dance their way through Kakadu National Park

Friday, June 13, 2008

This July school holidays, Blacktown Arts Centre in association with Sydney West Dance Company will present a dance production called Peta And The Croc. This energetic and visually beautiful show will be a fun activity for all the family to enjoy with seven performances taking place in the week from 5 - 12 July.

Peta & The Croc is an Australian dance adaptation of the Russian Children's tale Peter and the Wolf. Originally set in the deep forests of Russia, this adaptation takes place in the Kakadu National Park in Northern Territory, Australia.

Peta ventures out into the bush without her Grandfather's consent to catch the Croc. Along the way she meets the Budgie, the Dingo, the Brolga and the Stockmen who join her on the adventure.

The production draws on the mythical Aboriginal history of the landscape through The Spirit of the Land which is performed live on didgeridoo. The show also features local Indigenous young dancers from indigenous performance group Thulli Dreaming. The Indigenous content of the show also coincides with NAIDOC week celebrations.

This is the premiere performance for Sydney West Dance Company, directed by Mount Druitt local Helen Dallas who is also the Company Director. The story will be narrated by Lex Marinos with music by Prokofiev from the original story.
