“Local heroes” receive sustainability grants

Tuesday, September 25, 2007

Two community groups have been awarded grants to undertake projects that will contribute to environmental sustainability in the Blacktown local government area as part of an innovative "Grass Roots" program funded by WSN Environmental Solutions.

This is the third year that the Grass Roots Program has been run, with 22 projects in 12 council areas completed during 2006-2007.

Earlier this year community groups and individuals in 32 local government areas across Sydney had the opportunity to apply through their council for a grant to run their own sustainable project.

The successful projects in Blacktown are…

Oasis Community Garden - installation of self designed worm farm

Parklea Public School - a green house and propagating equipment
Blacktown City Council Mayor, Clr Leo Kelly, said "Volunteers are the lifeblood of any community and it's great to see so many people giving up their time and resources to do work that benefits not only the people but the local environment of the Blacktown City council area. Well done to all those involved for taking the initiative to develop their own sustainable projects."

WSN Environmental Solutions' CEO, Ken Kanofski, said "Often it's small community projects that can have the biggest impact on the local environment. Through the Grass Roots program we wanted to be responsible, give groups and individuals the opportunity to bring their great ideas to life, and inspire others to become involved in projects that benefit their local environment."

Mr Kanofski continued, "This is the third year that we have run the Grass Roots Program and, once again, the quality of applications has been very high. WSN Environmental Solutions is proud to be able to support these projects focused on environmental sustainability at a small community level to make a big difference."

21 projects of different scale and type across greater Sydney will be funded by the 2007-2008 program. A showcase event will be held in June 2008 to celebrate these completed projects.
