Councillor Michelle Rowland announced Deputy Mayor
Councillor Leo Kelly, OAM has been re-elected the Mayor of Blacktown City and Councillor Michelle Rowland elected as Deputy Mayor, it was announced following Blacktown City Council's meeting on Wednesday, September 19, 2007.
Mayor Kelly said that he was delighted to be given the opportunity to continue to lead the largest and most progressive local Council in NSW. Mayor Kelly has served the Blacktown City community for over 27 years.
"I look forward to continuing the excellent work being undertaken by both Councillors and the staff, whose combined efforts have seen outstanding results for the Blacktown City Community," Mayor Kelly said.
"The vision, achievements and innovation of Blacktown City Council are continuously being recognised and proven through the many exciting projects our City is embarking on. Blacktown City currently encompasses 47 suburbs and is undertaking more projects and initiatives than ever before. As Mayor, I am honoured to be a part of this progress and the City's future," Mayor Leo Kelly said.
"We are at the start of on a very exciting year in Blacktown City's history with numerous developments nearing completion and many others underway that will provide not only better sporting, but cultural, retail, educational, and historical facilities and services for the people of Blacktown City," Mayor Kelly said.
"Some of these include the construction of the Dennis Johnson Library at Stanhope Gardens, the expansion of Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope, planning for the redevelopment of the Blacktown Showground into a major cultural and arts precinct, and the development of AFL and Cricket facilities at Blacktown Olympic Park," Mayor Kelly said.
"We also look forward to continuing our work with the people of Blacktown City on a number of programs that have proven to be instrumental in enhancing the lifestyles of our community while also improving the local environment and amenity of the area," Mayor Kelly said.
"We have come a long way over the past 100 years and have seen a shift in the image of Blacktown, as more people discover Blacktown City can offer the family lifestyle AND the educational and employment opportunities they seek. Today, Blacktown City offers a rare combination of liveability with commercial success, boasting both award-winning residential estates and internationally acclaimed commercial areas," Mayor Kelly said.
Mayor Kelly has lived in Blacktown City for over 50 years and was first elected to Council in 1980. He served as Mayor from 1985-87 and in 1990-91, before taking up the post again in March 2004.
Councillor Rowland was elected as a Councillor for the Blacktown City Local Government Area in March 2004, as a Ward Two representative and is delighted to serve the Blacktown Community as Deputy Mayor.
"Blacktown City is the hub of the Greater Sydney region - the City is booming and is leading New South Wales in the provision of community and recreational services as well as employment and population growth. It is an honour to serve this large community as Deputy Mayor of New South Wales' largest and most dynamic Council".
"I look forward to the challenges ahead, and continuing my working with the local community and my fellow Councillors and the staff to ensure a bright future for Blacktown City," Deputy Mayor Rowland said.
