Blacktown City Council is calling for nominations from all local residents and community groups for Blacktown City's Senior Citizen of the Year Award.

Seniors Week (18 - 25 March) is a great opportunity for the Blacktown City community to acknowledge the contribution that senior citizens make to our community.

"The Senior Citizen of the Year Award is a prestigious one which recognises the time and effort volunteered by seniors, making a positive contribution to our community", Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Alan Pendleton said.

Mr Harry Taylor was the recipient of the Award 2011. Harry exemplifies the true spirit of giving and is well known across Blacktown particularly for volunteering over 40 years teaching swimming to the very young and to the not so young.

Harry is also a man who works tirelessly for charity, helping to raise many thousands of dollars each year, particularly for the Blacktown Relay for life - an annual event that raises funds for cancer research

Seniors just like Harry who live in the Blacktown City Local Government Area, aged over 50 and have given a voluntary commitment to senior citizens are eligible for the 2012 Senior Citizen of the Year Award.

Nominees can be recognised for their work undertaken in the last 12 months or over a number of years.

There are numerous Seniors Week events organised for Blacktown City and these will be detailed in a free Seniors Week program. The program will be available from Council from late February and will include all the dates, times and venues for the events occurring during Seniors Week.

"Seniors Week is an opportunity for the seniors in our community to interact with one another. It is also a fantastic opportunity for seniors to learn more about health, fitness and lifestyle through a range of planned activities", Mayor Pendleton continued.

The recipient of the Senior of the Year award will be announced at the finale of Blacktown City's extensive Seniors Week program on Sunday 25 March.
