Plus more than 350 animals are microchipped in August & September
Blacktown City Council's Travelling Ward FREE Plant Giveaways that were held between August and September, 2009 have been hailed a success across all Wards in Blacktown City.
Over five weekends, 8,352 native and exotic plants were given away to Blacktown City residents and 372 cats and dogs were microchipped at the Giveaways.
The Giveaways are an annual event in Blacktown City's event calendar, enabling local residents in Council's five Wards to collect two plants for free.
The 2009 Giveaways also saw the introduction of free microchipping for cats and dogs in Blacktown City. Council's Animal Service Officers were at each Giveaway microchipping pets and offering advice on responsible pet ownership.
"The Travelling Ward FREE Plant Giveaways are a great initiative of the Council and are a great way to help residents beautify their gardens and assist in the greening of Blacktown City", Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Charlie Lowles said.
"I was extremely impressed with the response the Giveaways received in Ward 5 which had more than 2,000 plants given away and 196 dogs and cats microchipped on September 19 - which was a fantastic outcome".
"Residents who missed out on receiving their two free plants at the Giveaways can visit Council's Nursery, where they can collect two free plants each year", Mayor Lowles continued.
Blacktown City Council's Nursery stocks a great range of plants including; trees, shrubs and groundcovers of both native and exotic species.
The Nursery is located at the rear of Blacktown Showground, accessible via Kent Street, Blacktown, and is open Tuesday - Friday between 9am - 3pm. Residents who wish to collect their free plants, must show identification with their address such as a rates notice or drivers license. For more information or details call the Nursery on 9671 3576.
