  • Planet Ark's National Tree Day on Sunday, August 2, 2009

The Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Charlie Lowles is encouraging the local community to plant a tree on National Tree Day on Sunday, August 2, 2009 to help improve the local environment and contribute to one of our City's best features - our bushland and trees.

Blacktown City Council has established five sites across the City where members of the community can meet up between 9.00am and 1.00pm on National Tree Day to plant trees and shrubs.

  1. Melrose Park, Melrose Ave, Quakers Hill
  2. Morgan Power Reserve, Vardy's Road, Kings Langley
  3. Mujar Bija Reserve, St Martin's Cres, Blacktown
  4. Everton Reserve, Cobbler Cres, Minchinbury
  5. Mittigar Reserve, Luxford Rd, Hassall Grove

National Tree Day is Australia's largest community tree-planting event which has seen over 2 million volunteers plant over 13 million native trees and shrubs. This result has been achieved through the efforts of many local Councils, schools and community groups who have supported the event over the years.

In 2008, Blacktown City residents planted 6,600 native trees in local reserves on National Tree Day.

The combined efforts of Planet Ark and local communities such as Blacktown City have ensured the success of National Tree Day over the past 14 years. This successful campaign has in turn facilitated the improvement and maintenance of clean air, and has helped to improve our environment.

"National Tree Day is the perfect opportunity for members of the community to help sustain our local environment and keep our City a green City," said Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Charlie Lowles.

Council is encouraging all residents to assist in the success of this year's Planet Ark Tree Day. Local schools will also have opportunity to participate in this terrific environmental initiative, with Schools Tree Day taking place on Friday, July 31, 2009.

Remember - for a fun day, bring along a drink, wear a hat, long sleeves, long pants, gloves and appropriate closed in shoes. To participate at one of Council's five National Tree Day sites please contact Council's Bushcare or Regenesis project team on Council on 9839 6000.
