Students learn about Blacktown’s Past

Thursday, November 1, 2007

Blacktown Visitor Information and Heritage Centre will host its first tour as part of its educational and public program, with 75 grade 5 - 6 students from Norwest Christian College, this Thursday, November 1, 2007 between 11am - 2pm.

Based in the heritage listed, former Blacktown Public School building on Flushcombe Road, the Visitor and Information Centre's first schools program will be based on its current exhibition, 'From Marbles to Microsoft' - that presents a history of the Public School that opened in 1877.

As part of the school's tour, Norwest Christian College students will learn about the Blacktown Public School building and will step back to a 1800s school yard and play games of marbles, hopscotch and jacks.

"This school program is ideal for our City's students to learn about our City's past and will give insight into what it was like for their grandparents and parents to go to school", Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Leo Kelly, OAM said.

Opened in July this year, the Blacktown Visitor Information and Heritage Centre has been referred to as "an asset" and a "gem" by those that have visited. Without a doubt, the Visitor and Heritage Centre will also point you in the right direction of great attractions and entertainment, all located in Blacktown City.

The 'From Marbles to Microsoft' is the first of many of future schools programs to be held at the Visitor Information and Heritage Centre. The 'From Marbles to Microsoft' school tour is still available for bookings from school groups and is ideal for primary school students. Schools interested in booking a tour should contact the Visitor Information and Heritage Centre on 1300 362 099 or by emailing Visitor Information.Centre@blacktown.nsw.gov.au
