Students learn how to keep Australia beautiful!

Monday, August 27, 2007

Blacktown City Council has engaged The Keep Australia Beautiful NSW mobile education unit, Waste Watchers to visit 22 schools in the Blacktown City Local Government Area to educate students about environmental care.

As part of Council's overall Environmental Sustainability Strategy, 2007 marks the eighth year that Waste Watchers has visited schools in Blacktown City. The program educates local school children to 'do the right thing' by disposing of litter properly and to reuse and recycle. The program also covers topics such as water catchment protection, water conservation and recycling food scraps and garden waste through worm farming and composting.

"The program has been extremely successful in our local schools. It is a great opportunity for students to learn new environmental tips and also get some hands on experience, which we hope they will then use at home and at school", Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Leo Kelly, OAM said.

The program was developed specifically for primary school students and the interactive, enjoyable lessons are delivered by trained teachers.

The Keep Australia Beautiful program is one of many environmental programs offered by Council to local schools, organisations and residents. This year, local primary school principals were offered their choice of environmental topics from both Keep Australia Beautiful and Gould League NSW programs. Both were popular and a total of 37 schools are participating.
