Blacktown City Council has invited tenders from a select list of Building Companies for the design and construction of the $10.4 million expansion of Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope and development of the Denis Johnson Library.

Tender works on the site include the construction of a 1,200 square metre library, expansion of the existing Leisure Centre with an integrated foyer area to service all facilities and associated landscaping and accessways.

When complete the development will feature an expansion to Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope that will include extensions to the gym area, an expanded car park, a members lounge, creche extensions and a squash court.

Whilst the Denis Johnson Library will feature an integrated community foyer with the Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope, a children's storytelling area, youth lounge, technology area, a drive thru book drop off point, forecourt and plaza area.

Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Leo Kelly, OAM said the new Library is well positioned to service the increasing needs of this rapidly developing area of Blacktown City.

"Stanhope Gardens is at the centre of an area that is continuing to rapidly expand, areas like Rouse Hill, Kellyville Ridge, Acacia Gardens, The Ponds, Glenwood, Parklea and Schofields will benefit a great deal with the addition of the new Denis Johnson Library".

"The Leisure Centre extensions will compliment the existing facilities on offer for members and visitors. The Centre has had over 5 million visitors in just five years, these new extension will make the overall experience at Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope better", Mayor Kelly continued.

"This further enhancement at Stanhope is made possible because of the Section 94 Developer Contributions paid by the Developers of this particular area and which are being returned to the community as community assets".

"Facilities such as the Leisure Centre at Stanhope and these additional facilities would not be able to be built if these funds are taken from Council as is proposed by the State Government's Pro-developer Laws", Mayor Kelly said.

The $10.4 million development will also utilise environmental design aspects, with the library utilising sustainable design principles such as low energy light fittings, use of rainwater in the amenities and irrigation, and maximum use of natural light and ventilation.

Work on the development of the Denis Johnson Library and extensions to Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope are expected to commence in August 2008 with an expected completion of mid 2009.
