Blacktown City's Cancer Council's Relay for Life
Blacktown City residents are being 'patted on the back' for their continued support of Blacktown City's largest community fundraising event the Relay for Life. The thank you comes after over $2,200 was collected by members of the Blacktown City Relay for Life Committee in just one weekend at Emerton and Riverstone Shopping Centres and Parklea Markets.
Each month members of the Blacktown City Relay for Life Committee spend hours sitting out the front of local shopping centres selling raffle tickets and asking local residents to dip deep and donate a dollar or two, to the Blacktown City Relay for Life. The collections are proving to be an overwhelming success with the recently collection at Emerton and Riverstone Shopping Centres, and Parklea Markets being added to a fundraising total of $30,000 to date for 2007.
The Blacktown City Relay for Life event is still over two months away (October 27 & 28) and will see over 100 teams of 10 - 15 people setting up camp over the weekend to raise money towards cancer research. The event involves team members taking turns to walk around the Athletics Track at Blacktown Olympic Park (Eastern Road, Rooty Hill).
The event honours those whose lives have been touched by cancer and opens with a Survivor Lap at 10am on Saturday, October 27. Relay is for young and old and you can walk as many or few laps as you like, it's not a race - walk, run, camp out or simply come and show your support.
Donations are not the only way resident have been supporting Relay. In the past week, over 15 teams have registered to the Blacktown City Relay including a number of teams from St George Bank.
"The Relay is becoming an annual event for the residents of Blacktown City. The Committee are doing a fantastic job of getting the word out, about what relay is and how they can support it. I suspect 2007 is going to be the largest Relay for Life this City has seen", Blacktown City Relay for Life Committee Chairperson, Peter Filmer said.
The Blacktown City Relay for Life will be officially launched this coming Thursday, August 30 at Westpoint Blacktown with a Mini Relay taking place around the shopping centre. Local shoppers are encourage to visit Westpoint on Thursday and enjoy the festivities of the night.
