Council receives grant of $1,430 for a Bicycle Recycle grant
Blacktown City Council has been successful in receiving a Housing NSW Eco-Wise Community Grant worth $1,430 to implement a Bicycle Recycle Program.
The Bicycle Recycle initiative of Council will involve recycling bicycle parts collected by local residents and turning them into fully functional bicycles.
The program not only encourages the community to recycle the parts of bicycles but it promotes a practical and unique way of reducing our impact of the environment - turning something old to new!
The program is already underway in Blacktown City and coordinated by local volunteers at the Edmund Rice Community Nursery in Bidwill.
"This program is very unique and the grant from Housing NSW will help this great work continue", Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Leo Kelly, OAM said.
The participation by its volunteers highlights the communities dedication to be proactive in caring for the environment".
"The bicycles when they are complete will be distributed to local residents to use - its win for the environment and a win for our residents", Mayor Kelly continued.
The program aims to be educational about the effects of illegal dumping, the positives of recycling within homes, suburbs and the environment as well as the training local social housing tenants in new skills.
The Bicycle Recycle Program was one of 16 projects funded under the Housing NSW 2007/2008 Eco-Wise Community Grants pilot program. The program supports Blacktown City Council and Housing NSWs commitment to improving environmental sustainability.
