Shelley Public School encourages others to get involved in the Blacktown Relay for Life
For their first year ever, Shelley Public School is entering a team into the Blacktown Relay for Life and they are encouraging others in the local area to get on board.
Over 14 eager teachers and parents have already signed up to the Shelley Public School team and are excited to work together as a school community to help the very worthy cause.
"Some participants are walking in memory of a loved one and others are walking in support of family members who have been or are currently battling cancer", Shelley Public School Relieving Principal, Jo-Ann Campion said.
"At Shelley Public School, the staff and P&C members are committed to supporting community projects such as the Relay for Life, and in 2009 are hoping to raise as much as possible for the Cancer Council to support them in their work", Relieving Principal, Campion said.
Billed as a 'Team Event to Fight Cancer', Relay for Life involves teams of 10 to 15 people taking turns to walk laps around their local oval. Relay for Life is an overnight event - enabling walkers to come and go as they please, or pitch a tent next to the track and stay the night. The 2009 Blacktown Relay for Life will take place over the October 31 and November 1 weekend at Blacktown Olympic Park's Athletics track.
"It is great to see our local schools coming on board with the Relay for Life, we have 119 schools in the Blacktown City area and I am encouraging every one of them to join in the Relay for Life" said Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Charlie Lowles.
The event, which is open to people of all ages, focuses on remembering and celebrating the lives of those who have been touched by cancer, while raising funds for cancer research, education and support services.
"During its seven-year history, Blacktown Relay For Life has raised over $900,000 and given thousands of people the opportunity to share their stories and develop new friendships," said Mayor Lowles.
The community are invited to visit Shelley Public School on Saturday, September 26 at 10am for their annual Shelley Fete, Rides and Fireworks Gala Day. The day is FREE to attend and will have lots of activities for people of all ages. Shelley Public School is located on Hadrian Avenue, Blacktown .
