Purchasing Burial Rights and Burying in Council Cemeteries

A burial right is a right to bury in a cemetery. This is not the purchase of an actual piece of land.

Riverstone - Burial rights at Riverstone can be purchased through Council. The burial location is the next available plot in the appropriate section. A particular location cannot be chosen. Riverstone has the following sections — Catholic, Anglican (C of E), Muslim, Non-Sectarian, Methodist and Presbyterian. Read more ....  Riverstone Cemetery Brochure

St Bartholomew's — At present no new burial rights can be purchased at St Bartholomew's. Burials can only take place at St Bartholomew's where rights were purchased prior to 1992. In some instances where appropriate family connections can be proven, additional ashes may be interred in existing used plots.

Purchase - Where it is desired to pre purchase a burial right at Riverstone or to check the status of an existing right at either cemetery, Council's Property Section should be contacted on 9839 6000. Receipts for purchase of the burial right should be stored in a safe place that is known to appropriate family members.

How do I organise a burial?

When the need to use a burial right arises the simplest process is to contact a funeral home who will contact Council on your behalf on the first Council business day to make arrangements for the interment. If a burial right has been pre-purchased, you should provide the receipt for the purchase of the burial right to the funeral home for presentation to Council. Where this is unavailable other evidence must be provided. This is particularly important where the right has been purchased prior to Council's commecing management of the cemetery, as there are limited records of these pre purchases. Where such evidence cannot be provided, Council reserves the right to refuse permission for interment. The funeral home also arranges opening and closing of the plot.

Muslim Burials

This section is administered by the Riverstone Muslim Cemetery Board Inc, Ahmadiyya Anjuman Ishaat Islam and Riverstone Ahmadiyya Muslim Association Inc. All initial enquiries should be directed to one of these organisations. Alternatively, enquiries can be made through Muslim based funeral organisations.
