Centenary of Federation

Blacktown City Council's celebration of Australia's Centenary of Federation concluded with a time capsule — a reflection of what life in Blacktown was like in 2001.

So What was the Centenary of Federation?

On 1st January, 1901, six colonies came together to form the Commonwealth of Australia, thus providing the constitutional framework under which Australia continues to grow and prosper. The Centenary of Federation in 2001 provided the opportunity for all Australians to celebrate and commemorate one of the most significant achievements in Australia's history - Federation, and the birth of our nation as we know it today.

Former Premier of NSW Mr Barrie Unsworth was the Chairman of the New South Wales Centenary of Federation Committee and he described the celebration of the Centenary as follows " The Centenary of Federation is about people and participation, which is why we are inviting community and professional organisations to organise events, projects and activities throughout 2000 and 2001."

Local Committee

A Local Committee was formed to develop a programme of celebration for the Year 2001 Centenary of Federation.

The Local Committee was chaired by Councillors Barbara Gapps and Kathie Collins.
The Committee Secretary was Council's Community Relations Officer, Mr Peter Filmer.
The Local Committee was working closely with the NSW Centenary of Federation Committee. Members of the Local Committee have attended seminars conducted by the NSW Committee and many great ideas have sprung from these seminars.
