Celebrate NAIDOC Week 2011 in Blacktown!
Each year Blacktown City joins the entire nation in celebrating NAIDOC Week. This year, from 3 to 10 July we highlight the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and promote awareness and recognition of their history and culture.
This celebration is particularly important to our local community as Blacktown is home to the largest Aboriginal community in NSW.
There are many activities held locally in recognition of this important week.
A Family Fun Day will be held at the Emerton Leisure Centre on Wednesday, 6 July between 12noon and 3pm. It will feature: a traditional Aboriginal and hip hop performance by Liv'en Truth, Aboriginal dance performance and art workshops, traditional Indigenous games, a touch football one-day knock out competition, information stalls, jumping castle, BBQ and much more for the whole family to enjoy.
The event will be held on the foreground of Emerton Leisure Centre and is free. Normal entry charges apply for entry into the Leisure Centre. For details call 9628 7016.
A Family Fun Day will also be held at Nurragingy Reserve on Saturday, 9 July from 10am to 4pm. The day will include a performance by Australian Idol winner Casey Donovan, face painting by Jeffery Samual, cultural stalls, cultural workshops such as weaving, tree planting with local artist Chris Tobin and a community banner project with western Sydney artist Adam Hill, BBQ and the planting of a traditional bush tucker garden.
This event is free and a free shuttle bus will be running to and from Mount Druitt and Blacktown Railway Stations all day. For more information, contact Council on 9839 6000.
Doonside Village Festival this Saturday
The Doonside Village Festival is on this Saturday, 2 July, 9am - 3pm in the Doonside CBD.
The annual fair will feature street stalls, amusement rides and lots of entertainment. I encourage all residents to attend and enjoy the festivities.
