Congratulation to the Sportsperson of the Year winner

I had the pleasure of congratulating the nominees and winners of the 2009 Sportsperson of the Year Awards on Saturday night, February 27 at Mount Druitt Workers Club.

Over 300 people attended the presentation evening with special guest speaker on the night, Parramatta Eels and Australian Rugby League legend, Mr Peter Sterling OAM.

Congratulations to all the winners on the night, the 2009 Awards had over 50 athletes from a variety of sports nominated for an award across the seven categories.

The top honour on the night, 2009 Sportsperson of the Year was awarded to 18 year old, Luke Doran of Blacktown for his achievements in Cricket.

Luke is an all-round cricketer who has had numerous representative honours. At 18 years of age, he was selected in the NSW under 19's Cricket Team to play in the Australian Championships, where he was the leading wicket taker and was named 'Cricketer of the Championship'. He was also chosen to captain the Australian under 19's Team, where he led Australia to victory over India.

I encourage local residents who know someone who is excelling at their sport and should be recognised for their sporting achievements to nominate them for the 2010 Sportsperson of the Year Award.
