International Day of People with a Disability - December 3, 2010
Join in the Blacktown celebrations
International Day of People with a Disability aims at increasing awareness within the wider community, that disabilities do not stop people from achieving great things. To celebrate the day in Blacktown City, there will be an art exhibition and expo on Friday, December 3, 2010 at The Sargents Centre, 9-13 First Avenue, Blacktown.
I encourage the wider local community to join in on the celebrations that will showcase the talents, skills, contributions and achievements of people with disabilities.
A number of art and disability agencies in the Blacktown area will display artworks and provide information stalls on the day. Just some of the displays include photography by Karelle Life Enrichments Services, lantern-making by the Tuesday Night Club, and wood-working and scrap-booking projects by Pecky's .
For further information, please contact Council on 9839 6067 or register your event on the International Day of People with Disability website www.idpwd.com.au.
Relay for Life this weekend at Blacktown Olympic Park
The Cancer Council's Blacktown Relay for Life takes place this weekend, 10am, Saturday, October 30 to 10am, Sunday, October 31 at Blacktown Olympic Park, Eastern Road, Rooty Hill.
The weekend is FREE to participate in, with entertainment being held throughout the day and night. So even if you can't participate in the Relay, I encourage you to come down, bring a picnic blanket and show your support.
The event focuses on remembering and celebrating the lives of those who have been touched by cancer, while raising funds for cancer research, education and support services. The Relay for Life has been proven to be one of the best community fundraising events in Blacktown City.
I look forward to the community showing their support this weekend. It's still not too late to register a team or to get involved, for further information visit www.relayforlife.com.au/nsw or call 9354 2003.
Volunteer BBQ this weekend at Blacktown Olympic Park
I also invite all the wonderful residents of Blacktown City who throughout the year have volunteered their time and efforts to assist Council in a variety of ways, to come along to a special BBQ at 5:30pm on Saturday Oct 30 at Athletics Centre at Blacktown Olympic Park (in conjunction with the Relay for Life event). The event is being held to recognise and highlight our volunteers' invaluable contribution that they have, and continue to make, to the city and people of Blacktown. Call Council for more information.
