Sport in Western Sydney has a NEW name

I am very pleased to inform residents that Blacktown Olympic Park on Eastern Road Rooty Hill has a new name - 'Blacktown International Sportspark Sydney'.

Owned by Council, the sports park is 'home' to two national sporting teams - the GWS Giants (AFL) and the Sydney BlueSox (Baseball). With almost half a million visitors per year, the Park has become so much more than simply an Olympic legacy site - it has become a major national and international sport venue of repute.

The new name and logo were developed to capture the Park as it is today and as it hopes to be in going forward. The Olympic spirit and legacy will always be at the heart of the venue but with the expansion of sports and facilities in recent years, plus 2010 marking 10 years since the 2000 Olympics, it was opportune to 'freshen up' the Park's profile.

This is an exciting time for Blacktown City, as the new name and logo for our flagship sporting venue acknowledges its growing status on the international and national sporting stage.

Mount Druitt Community Resource Hub set to open in November

Work is well advanced on the construction of the Mount Druitt Community Resource Hub in Dawson Mall. I attended a site inspection on Thursday, 21 July 2011 with Federal Member Ed Husic and Ward Councillors.

I was very pleased to see that already so much work is complete - external walls on the ground floor complete, along with work on the disabled access ramp and the stairs from the car park and the new roof.

Council at its ordinary meeting on Wednesday 20 July 2011 resolved to formally name the facility The Mount Druitt Hub. The $8 million development is jointly funded (50/50) between Blacktown City Council and the Australian Government under the Australian Government's Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program Strategic Projects 2010 funding agreement

The Mount Druitt Hub will be Council's largest community facility and will see the original library and senior citizen centre transformed into a two storey multi-purpose building promoting lifelong learning, health and wellbeing, and recreation and culture.

The Resource Hub will be a place where local community members can come together, meet, interact, learn new skills, access education and health services, share ideas and enjoy life.
