Trade Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship within Blacktown City Council is a fantastic way to start your career in your preferred trade.

The type of apprenticeships offered each year varies. So please look under Apprentice and Trainee Recruitment Information to determine what apprenticeships are available and the important dates you need to know.

Apprenticeships offered can be in any of the following trades:

  • Carpenter
  • Electrician
  • Gardener
  • Greenkeeper

  • Heavy Plant Mechanic
  • Plumber

Schedule of Training

A four year apprenticeship within Council includes the following components:

Year 1, 2 & 3

9 day fortnight which includes 1 day per week at TAFE or may involve 1 week block release to attend TAFE once a month with the remaining days being on-the-job training, under the supervision of a tradesperson.

Year 4

As a nearly qualified tradesperson your TAFE Certificate III (in your relevant trade) will be completed and you will be working a 9 day fortnight within Council.


Auto Electrical

You like motor vehicles but would prefer to do electrical work? Council has approximately 1600 units of plant and equipment that you will be trained to assist and carry out auto-electrical servicing and repairs on. You will be working on small, medium and large motor vehicles and heavy plant. This is an excellent, diverse apprenticeship that should develop a well rounded knowledgeable auto electrician.

Completion Qualification: Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology


Carpenter

As an apprentice carpenter you will have the opportunity to work in a close team environment with approximately 15 other carpenters who will assist to build and develop your skills within the carpentry trade. The primary function of this position is to assist in the maintenance, construction and renovation of Council's approximately 500 buildings. Other duties may include cabinet making and assembling stages/backdrops for special events.

Completion Qualification: Certificate III in General Construction (Carpentry)


Electrician

Do you want to be an electrician? Why not become an apprentice electrician for Blacktown City Council. In conjunction with your formal off the job training through TAFE you will receive hands-on training from our qualified electricians. As an apprentice electrician you will be required to assist in the maintenance of Council buildings and other infrastructure as required. Some of the duties may include testing and tagging of tools and equipment, installing and maintaining lighting in sporting facilities, maintenance of electrical equipment at Council's facilities, wiring and light installation and fault finding.

Completion Qualification: Certificate III in Electro technology Systems Electrician


Gardener

Do you like gardening and working outdoors? This may be the apprenticeship for you! As an apprentice gardener you will gain a wide variety of experience within the horticultural trade. The primary function of this position is to assist with the maintenance and development of approx 800 parks and reserves owned by Blacktown City Council. Council's nursery also provides apprentices with hands-on experience at identifying, maintaining and propagating individual plants. Any work experience or interest in gardening is highly regarded.

Completion Qualification: Certificate III in Horticulture (Parks and Gardens)


Greenkeeper

Would you like to work outdoors? This apprenticeship enables you to develop sound knowledge of the practical skills required to establish and maintain greens, sporting surfaces and turf production. You will learn to; establish and construct turf playing surfaces, prepare turf surfaces for sports, renovate sports turf, control weeds, prepare and apply pesticides, install irrigation and drainage systems and operate and maintain machinery. You will learn about soils and plants as well as observe environmental work practices. Any work experience or interest in gardening is highly regarded.

Completion Qualification: Certificate III in Horticulture (Turf)


Painter

As an apprentice painter you will gain experience in a number of areas. As an apprentice in this trade you will assist in painting and decorating commercial, industrial and domestic premises owned by Council. You will also have the opportunity to learn computerised sign writing in Council's own sign shop. Any work experience or interest in painting is highly regarded.

Completion Qualification: Certificate III in Painting and Decorating


Heavy Vehicle Mechanic

Always wanted to be a mechanic? Council has approximately 1600 units of plant and equipment that you will be trained to assist with and carry out the mechanical servicing and repair work on. The equipment you will be working on ranges from lawn mowers and motor graders to vehicles. This is an excellent diverse apprenticeship that will produce a well rounded knowledgeable motor mechanic.

Completion Qualification: Certificate III in Automotive Mechanical Technology (Heavy Vehicle)

Please note, the Year 2, 3 and 4 motor mechanic apprentices will be required to do morning and afternoon shift work.


Plumber

With approximately, 500 buildings owned by Council, you will be required to assist in the maintenance of these buildings and other infrastructure. Some of your duties may include working with pipes, tubing and plumbing fixtures within storm water systems, new water services, gas fittings and waste. This apprenticeship is great for someone who is hands-on and likes to work in a close team environment.
