Travelling to work

Blacktown is 34 kilometres west of Sydney which is approximately 40 minutes by car or train from the Sydney CBD.

The Blacktown railway station is on the North Shore, Northern & Western Line of the Sydney Trains network.

A major bus interchange is located next to Blacktown station and an underground bus station is at the entrance to Westpoint. Blacktown is a terminus of the North-West T-way.

Busways provides services north (Rouse Hill, Castle Hill, Kellyville, Glenwood and Stanhope Gardens), west (Mount Druitt, Plumpton, Oakhurst, Quakers Hill, Dean Park, Woodcroft) and south (Prospect, Arndell Park, Huntingwood, Tallawong, Doonside, Blacktown Hospital), whilst Hillsbus provides services east (Macquarie Park, Seven Hills, Parramatta, Kings Langley) of Blacktown.

Our wellness programs

We value the health and wellbeing of our employees. We take part in various health and wellbeing initiatives across the Council, which are available to all employees. These include quit smoking, health screening, wellbeing and lifestyle expos for staff, and a free flu shot.

We also offer 15 days paid sick leave and carers leave for eligible staff.

Employee assistance program: we offer a free comprehensive employee assistance program and onsite counselling support service for staff and their immediate family designed to assist in meeting the challenges and demands of work and personal life.

Family and Domestic Violence: we acknowledge that violence in the workplace and in the community in all forms is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We are committed to:

  • promoting a workplace culture which supports employees who are affected by family and domestic violence

Swimming and recreational facilities: we offer staff corporate rates for our aquatic and recreation facilities plus an additional $300 annual credit after 12 months employment.

Eligible staff members are also able to participate in Fitness Passport, giving them access to over 100 gyms and fitness centres within the wider Sydney region at a discounted rate. Single and family memberships are available. 

Family friendly options for staff

We offer employees a flexible approach to working arrangments.

This includes access to paid maternity leave and concurrent parental leave entitlements for eligible employees. Upon returning to work from maternity leave, employees have the ability to request flexible working arrangements up until their youngest child is of schooling age.

Learning and education

Study assistance and study leave: we support, encourage and enable employees to further develop their knowledge, skills and capabilities by undertaking studies.

Learning and development: we are committed to providing training and education to assist employees to prepare for future career path development. This includes seminars, network meetings, conferences, external and internal training and ongoing skill and competency development.

Higher duties and secondment: we encourage staff to take advantage of 'acting-up' roles and secondments to develop their leadership experiences, broaden their skills and prepare them for potential future opportunities.

Your finances

Salary sacrifice: employees have the option to reduce their taxable income by salary sacrificing additional super or child care fees (Council run facility).

Leaseback vehicle for selected positions: employees can reduce their taxable income with a leaseback vehicle by salary sacrificing. We offer staff a choice of over 250 leaseback vehicles.

Council rates - automatic pay deductions: if you are a resident of Blacktown City you can have your rates automatically deducted from your pay to save you bank fees, time and inconvenience.

Private health insurance - automatic pay deductions: You can elect to have your private health insurance payments automatically deducted from your pay to save you bank fees, time and inconvenience (if option is available through your fund).

Weekly pay: payroll is weekly to help you manage your finances and budget.

Free financial planning advice: group and individual information sessions are available for all Local Government Superannuation members.

Other work benefits

Uniforms: we supply uniforms for frontline employees. Uniforms are also available for purchase and partially funded for all other employees.

Transfer of leave entitlements: if you are currently working with another local council in NSW you can bring some of your leave entitlements with you.

Staff Consultative Committee: In fostering employee participation, we recognise that our employees have the right to a level of involvement in their work and should have an influence in determining that level of involvement. Recognition of that necessary involvement is carried out by way of the Staff Consultative Committee.
