Congratulations, Emie Roy who is the winner of the Blacktown City Woman of the Year 2023.
Emie is a storyteller who founded ‘The Stories Untold’. This is a platform to bring light on several important recounts, that would otherwise have gone unnoticed, by creating socially and culturally relevant audio, visual and print stories to help spread the message of inclusion.
Emie challenges the traditional gender stereotype of women being submissive and vulnerable. She herself is a role model by being proactive in initiating change. In 2022 she curated and co-edited ‘The Light at the End of the Tunnel’, in partnership with Blacktown City Libraries. The book is an anthology based on the real-life pandemic experiences of 50 people across Greater Sydney; of which, 32 stories are women. Emie also wrote and directed a documentary project called ‘Unlocked’, about how the isolation during the pandemic times changed the lives of 4 people in Western Sydney, of which three are women. Through the book and the project, she has been able to start many conversations about inclusivity, diversity and equity because of the way she unfolded the powerful stories of several women.
Emie connects with all generations amongst the migrant communities as a mentor and speaker, to inculcate the spirit of gender equality and break down the stereotypical attitudes and norms through her written and spoken words.
Emie never shies away from a challenge and goes above and beyond to help her community.
The story continues to be written, and we encourage all women to be involved in their community wherever they can.
