Overview

Blacktown City is home to many keen sports enthusiasts. We recognise their sporting achievements with the Sportsperson of the Month Awards which are presented every 3 months at a special presentation ceremony.

The Sports Awards have been operating since 1983 and recognise the City's sports men, women, boys and girls in the following categories:

Sportsperson of the Month: open to individuals of any age who are residents, students or members of a Blacktown City Based sporting organisation or school. Athlete can only win the monthly award once in a year.

Junior Sportsperson of the Month: (16 and under) open to individuals who are residents, students or members of a Blacktown City Based sporting organisation or school. Athlete can only win the monthly award once in a year. 

Coach of the Year: open to individuals of any age who are residents, students or members of a Blacktown City Based sporting organisation or school. Must have coached for 3 years within Blacktown City.

Team of the Year: must be Blacktown City Based Teams only. Can be from a club or School.

Sports Administrator of the Year: open to residents and/or sporting/recreational administrators who preside over the administrative affairs of a Blacktown City Based club/association and who have served in an elected capacity for a period of not less than 3 years. 

Volunteer of the Year: open to residents and persons who are involved  with local sporting/recreational clubs. You do not need to be a committee member of a sporting club but can just be a volunteer.

Club of the Year: Blacktown City based only. Non for profit sporting clubs with at least 50% of memberships residing within Blacktown City.

Junior Sports Official: (16 and under) awarded to umpires, referees, technical officials etc. at national and state championships, regional, association or club level for outstanding achievements and contributions in the nomination period from October to November.

Senior Sports Official: awarded to umpires, referees, technical officials etc. at national and state championships, regional, association or club level for outstanding achievements and contributions in the nomination period from October to November.

35th Blacktown City Sports Awards Gala Presentation 

The Blacktown City Sports Awards program has been operating since 1982, offering recognition of Blacktown City’s most sporting men, women, boys and girls. The awards involve people of all ages and abilities, and help promote sports and sporting clubs within our city. 2017 is the 35th season of the Blacktown City Sports Awards.

This season saw 83 nominations from 29 different sports. Also a new category was introduced, namely the Junior and Senior Sports Official of the Year. The categories that will be presented on the night will be:

  • Sports Person of the Year

  • Junior Sports Person of the Year

  • Open Sports Encouragement Awards

  • U12 Years Sports Encouragement Awards

  • Coach of the Year

  • Sports Administrator of the Year

  • Volunteer of the Year

  • Junior Sports Official of the Year

  • Senior Sports Official of the Year

  • Team of the Year

  • Club of the Year

  • Mayors Shield ‘Long Service to Sport’.

Ticket Prices:

Adult (13+): $40.00. Includes 3 course adult meal

Child (12 and under): $25.00.Includes 2 course child meal

Sports Official criteria

  • Nominee must reside in the Blacktown City LGA

  • The following criteria will be taken into account for judging

  • Level of competition regularly officiated

  • Major tournaments / championships officiated

  • Level of accreditation and commitment to ongoing development

  • Shows leadership including mentoring / education of other officials.

Please note that whilst not excluded from nomination those who officiate at the very highest professional level are not intended for these awards. We are seeking nominations for officials at the grass roots level of the game or who are developing and/or aspiring to reach the professional level.

Terms and conditions

Nominations are open to people of all ages from across the Blacktown City Local Government Area, and are encouraged from the local community for deserving sports people or those who are heavily involved in the administration of their sport.

All of the Sportsperson of the Month winners and category nominees are then invited to the annual Sports Awards Gala Presentation night held in February each year. At this presentation overall winners for the respective year are awarded, i.e. Sportsperson of the Year.

The awards year is from November 1st to October 31st.

Presentations are held quarterly per year.

Nominations must come from a recognised sport/recreation.

Any individual or organisation can nominate a sports person, junior sports person, team, club, coach, sports administrator or volunteer. However, individual nominations must be verified by an official of the relevant organisation and should include contact details.
