Welcome our School Holiday Guide!

Blacktown City Council's School Holiday Guide has some great suggestions for families looking for activities over these school holidays.

Learn how to make crumpet pizzas with the kids or attend an art workshop at the Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre.

Visit some of our great local attractions these school holidays including the new Sydney Zoo, Featherdale Wildlife Park and Western Sydney Parklands!


Get walking in Blacktown City

Spring is here and with it the warmer weather, so why not enjoy it by heading outside for at least 30 minutes each day! 

Try walking for short trips to the shops, playspaces or one of our libraries!

To find your local park, sportsfield, skate park, dog off-leash area, outdoor fitness equipment or to download handy maps of where to walk, click here! 

Remember to wear a hat, sunscreen, take a drink bottle, and be COVID safe by using hand sanitiser and staying 1.5 metres away from others.

Creative Holidays with Blacktown Arts

Creative holidays

Ever wanted to make your own shadow puppet? Keen to create your own manga character? Or just want to get the family together to make art? The Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre has you covered these school holidays!

There are workshops for children and young people of all ages, ranging from abstract painting to anime drawing. See them all here.

Places are very limited, so make sure to book early!


Do you know a little animal lover who dreams of being a zookeeper one day?

If so, they can’t miss the opportunity to become a zookeeper this school holidays!  Bring the kids (aged 8-13) along to Featherdale Wildlife Park’s Zookeeper for a Day Program these school holidays to make their dreams come true!

Little keepers will be accompanied by our Featherdale keepers and education officer for a range of activities around the park from 9 am – 3 pm, making friends with a variety of animals, learning about their specific diets, our enrichment programs to educate and engage our animals and most importantly, the important projects Featherdale is involved with across a variety of key species.

The Zookeeper for a Day is fully supervised by qualified education officers and keepers, and morning tea, lunch and water will be provided.

Booking is essential and spots will fill up quickly.

All budding zookeepers receive as part of their ticket:

  • zookeeper for a day shirt
  • gift bag
  • free kids entry for their next visit to Featherdale
  • each child will receive a Certificate of Completion at the conclusion of the day.

Zookeeper for the Day FAQs:

  • 4 sessions will be held during the Spring School Holidays: Monday 28 September, Friday 2 October, Tuesday 6 October and Thursday 8th October.
  • Zookeeper for a Day is available for kids ages 8-13.
  • A maximum of 10 children are allowed per session.

School holidays at Blacktown City Libraries

We challenge you to a game of Book Bingo! Pick up your bingo card from your nearest library to play.

All you need to do is fill in 2 rows vertically, horizontally or diagonally, and return it to the library by Friday 30 October to receive a prize!

Who is the greatest Wii Mario gamer? Join us on Tuesday 1 October from 2 pm - 4 pm at Our Library @ The Mount Druitt Hub for our Wii Mario tournament!

Games Night will include four side splitting social card/board games. Each game ensures loads of laughter and spirited game play complete with snacks!

Attention all table tennis fans! Join us on Thursday 8 October from 2 pm - 4 pm for a table tennis tournament at Max Webber Library. 

Grab your friends sign up and see if you can make it all the way to the finals and win that trophy!

Keep the kids entertained for hours and head to Bungarribee Park, Western Sydney Parklands these school holidays!

Bungarribee Park is located on Doonside Road in the Western Sydney Parklands.

Entries open for the 2020 Mayoral Creative Writing Prize

Do you have a way with words? A flair for fiction? An inner Shakespeare just bursting to be let out?

Entries are now open for the Blacktown City Council 2020 Mayoral Creative Writing Prize.

The annual competition is open to adults and children aged between 8 and 17 years who live in Blacktown City.

The theme for 2020 is The Whole World at Home. Submissions can be either a poem or short story and must be works of fiction.

Entries close at midnight on Sunday 27 September 2020.

Our Acceler8 school holiday program is back!

The program is for preschool and school aged children and is suitable for beginners or those who wish to fine tune their skills during the school holidays.

Dates: Monday 28 September - Friday 2 October and Tuesday 6 October - Friday 9 October 2020.

Times: 9 am - noon

Locations: Blacktown Leisure Centre Stanhope, Blacktown Aquatic Centre, Charlie Lowles Leisure Centre Emerton.

Aqua Learn to Swim - new enrolments open!

Aqua Learn to Swim is enrolling now for Term 4 2020 swimming lessons.

Aqua Learn to Swim is Council's own learn to swim program. We offer a safe, rewarding, fun and educational experience for all participants. We cater for all abilities from infants all the way up to adults.

Now is the perfect time to get into swimming lessons, an important skill as the weather warms up!

Dates: From Wednesday 30 September.

Times: From 9 am.

Blacktown City Art Prize - Young Artists Prize

We are celebrating the creativity of local young people with an environmentally-themed Young Artists Prize. Young people who live or study in Blacktown City and are aged 3 – 15 years are invited to enter work, with prizes up for grabs for all ages.

The artwork can be a drawing, painting, print, sculpture or ceramic piece. Artworks are displayed as part of the Blacktown City Art Prize exhibition from Saturday 28 November 2020 to Thursday 28 January 2021.

The theme for 2020 is Staying strong, as we work to recover from the rough year we have had so far.

Australia Day awards - Young Citizen of the Year

Council's 2021 Australia Day award applications are now open.

Finalists will be notified prior to Australia Day and the winners will be announced on 26 January at the Australia Day Awards Presentation. 

Council is looking for applications for our Young Citizen of the Year Award. 

To be eligible, the person must be an Australian Citizen and 21 years of age or less on 26 January 2020. They also must have provided outstanding community service and/or attained outstanding achievements in academics, sport or the arts during the year and/or over a number of years.

Youth Ambassador program

If you are a young person who enjoys public speaking, meeting new people, helping your community and would like to represent the youth of Blacktown City then this is the program for you! 

The Youth Ambassador Program involves the selection of two young people to serve as Ambassadors of Blacktown City for a period of 12 months.

The ambassadors must be residents of Blacktown City and be aged between 15 to 18 years.

Applications will close at 5.30 pm on Tuesday 6 October 2020.
