Forum to give Doonie a lift
Published on 09 July 2018
The campaign for a lift at Doonside Railway station will be the headline topic at Blacktown City Council’s community forum this month.
Mayor Stephen Bali MP said the lack of a lift at the station is “discrimination” to some of the most vulnerable people in the community.
“This community has been campaigning for a lift for over two decades and every year the lift is omitted from the NSW Government’s budget. The 2018 budget released last month has continued the neglect.”
“As a Doonside resident and Mayor I am the first to say this can’t go on, and I urge the community to come to our forum and air their concerns.”
The Doonside community forum is on Monday, 30 July at Doonside Community Centre, 31 Graham Street, Doonside.
Mayor Bali said: “I have invited the NSW Treasurer, Dominic Perrottet MP, and Minister for Transport, Andrew Constance to come to this forum and hear directly from the community.”
“I have already said we need to up the ante on this, and I urge you to campaign for them to face this community and come to the forum.”
Mayor Bali has been vocal about the “cold shoulder” Doonside residents received.
A joint Council and News Local campaign has seen several residents come forward detailing their own stories of difficulty using the railway station without a lift.
“Recently I visited the railway station and spoke to many residents who are struggling to get to work or go about their daily business.”
“The elderly, those with mobility or health issues, families with prams and even people taking extra bags were all struggling,” Mayor Bali said.
“It is shameful.”
“Clearly residents in Doonside will continue to be ignored unless we continue to lobby for this infrastructure.”
Other topics to be discussed at the forum include an update on Council events and festivals, and community safety programs in the area.
Forum details: Doonside community forum starts at 7pm on Monday, 30 July 7pm, The Doonside Community Centre, 31 Graham Street, Doonside.
