Skin Penetration Salons
Skin penetration services can create disease transmission risks. If correct hygiene practices are not implemented diseases like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV may be passed between clients.
In Blacktown City there are approximately 250 salons and skin penetration premises in operation. All businesses which perform skin penetration activities must ensure their staff follow correct procedures to protect themselves and customers. Skin penetration activities include tattooing, piercing, waxing, acupuncture and other beauty therapies.
Our role
All skin penetration businesses operating in Blacktown City are inspected at least once a year in relation to cleanliness, shop fit out, and sterilisation of equipment and personal hygiene of staff. Our Environmental Health Officers ensure skin penetration businesses are operating in compliance with the relevant standards and codes, including:
Public Health Performance Program
The Public Health Performance Program recognises skin penetration businesses that are practising effective infection control procedures.
We assign each business a star rating and provide them with a certificate showing this, which they can display in a prominent public-facing position.
Businesses receive a rating of 3 (Good), 4 (Very good) and 5 (Excellent) stars based on the outcome of the annual inspections of a skin penetration premises and their compliance with Public Health Act 2010 and the Public Health Regulation 2022.
Businesses that are eligible to be a part of the program include beauty salons, nail salons, hairdressers and barbers, body art and tattooing businesses and brothels.
