Overview

Special waste includes all waste materials that cannot be disposed of through your normal garbage or recycling service and cannot be placed with your household clean up material. Some of the most common special waste materials are listed here. For information on other materials or for more disposal options for waste, please see the B informed app.

Car and household batteries

Car and household batteries can be dropped off for free at the annual household Chemical CleanOut event. For details on upcoming CleanOut events please see the EPA Chemical CleanOut Website

These materials can also be dropped off at any time at any of the following locations:

  • ALDI - household batteries only 

  • Battery World Blacktown - accepts all batteries

  • Hawkesbury Community Recycling Centre

  • IKEA Marsden Park - household batteries only

  • Penrith Community Recycling Centre     

  •  Supercheap Auto (Blacktown and Mount Druitt - car batteries only)

Computers, laptops and televisions

A national collection and recycling scheme for televisions, computers and computer products is currently in effect under the Product Stewardship Legislation.

E-waste that is accepted for free at these sites includes:

  • televisions

  • desktop computers and laptops

  • computer keyboards

  • scanners

  • printers

  • fax machines.

Laser and inkjet printer cartridges

These materials can be disposed of at the following locations:

  • Australia Post (selected stores only)
  • The Good Guys
  • Harvey Norman (selected stores only)
  • JB Hi-Fi
  • Officeworks

Please contact your local store beforehand to confirm they will accept your printer cartridges.

Mobile phones

Paints

Paintback is now available for our community to drop of their unwanted paint all year round.

Paintback accepts a maximum of 100 litres per visit, stowed in containers of not more than 20lt.

  • two-component coatings.

Paintback transports the paint collected from the collection point for treatment. The packaging and waste liquid are separated.  The containers are recycled.  Waste paint is treated in a number of ways including energy recovery for solvent and liquid/solid separation for water-based paint, significantly minimising landfill over current practices.

 Tyres

Tyres can only be disposed of through an authorised agency. Please contact your local tyre dealer or a commercial waste facility to discuss tyre recycling. Please be aware that fees may apply.
