Anti Graffiti programs and initiatives
Council runs a number of anti graffiti programs and initiatives including the:
-
'Respect it Don’t Wreck it' school education program. Nearly 15,000 primary students have participated over the past 4 years. Programs are hoped to restart in Term 3, 2020 following its postponement due to COVID-19.
-
Blacktown & Mt Druitt Probation & Parole. Council has a partnership where local offenders remove graffiti, collect litter and mow nature strips. Last financial year, local offenders removed 11,756m2 of graffiti and mowed 603 nature strips.
-
Volunteer activities. We provide free materials to residents to remove graffiti from their properties and throughout their neighbourhoods. We have a fully equipped trailer that volunteers can use to conduct larger groups activities. Council also participates in NSW Graffiti Removal Day, where we are the biggest participating Council.
-
Juvenile Justice. Partnership where local young offenders remove graffiti. We also participate in Youth Justice Conferences, a process where a young offender meets with the victim of their crime, and a resolution is made for the young offender to atone for their crime (this is usually graffiti removal work, which we arrange).
Council also conducts a number of other initiatives including:
-
Taskforce Against Graffiti which was established to develop and monitor our Graffiti Management Plan. Download a copy of our Graffiti Management Plan.
-
Volunteer Graffiti Removal Program which provides free graffiti removal materials to residents and volunteer organisations to remove graffiti from residential property.
-
Graffiti Removal Options Team which assist residents to remove graffiti from residential property.
-
Graffiti Help Line which provides graffiti management advice to commercial property owners.
-
Graffiti Removal Team partnerships which utilise offenders from Probation and Parole and Juvenile Justice to remove graffiti throughout the City.
-
Preventative projects that encourage those at risk of graffiti offending with opportunities to develop their artistic skills and participate in legal aerosol art murals.
